Come skate with us on Oct. 31!  See you at the rink from 10:30-11:30am.  Also, please let us know which TWO Sundays in November you’d like to skate – Nov. 7th, 14th, or 21st.  Thanks!

We will then reserve two Sundays in December, the 5th and 12th, and hopefully have enough participation and interest to skate every Sunday in January and February, and the first two Sundays in March.  Are you in?

Fall 2018 update – November

And we’re off! Though our season began a bit late this year, we’ve had great turnout so far. November 11 brought us a total of 21 people on the ice! Welcome to all the new skaters!

Our December schedule is as follows: Sunday Dec. 2, 2:15-3:15, and Dec. 16, 2:15-3:15pm.

I’ve requested January dates as the 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th and will let you know the times as soon as I have confirmation from the rink.

Fall 2018 update – October

Check your inboxes for an email regarding this season’s ice fees. In order to schedule a regular weekly practice session with the rink, we’ll need to schedule it ahead of time and that means we need two things: more funds and more skaters!

I am hoping to hear from the rink soon about the schedule (I first requested it in early September)!

Summer/Fall 2018 update

We still have a rink! If you follow our Facebook page, you know that the rink management is purchasing the rink from the City Bible Church. I’ve requested ice time for October and will send out the dates/times when they are available.

Huge thanks to all who helped out at this year’s Bridge Pedal – Chris, Lisa, Sterling, Tony, Emily, Patrick, Max, Dave, Joseph, and Brooks! We’re grateful for the opportunity to earn funds to pay for ice time.

I’ll share minutes from the meetings of the Columbia River Ice Sports Association (CRISA) upon request. They’re working on forming their own 501c3 and fundraising efforts are underway to pay for legal and organization fees. Please visit their Facebook page.

Mountain View Ice Arena Update – rink is closing August 31, 2018

We received this news about the upcoming closure of Mountain View Ice Arena the end of August.

Here is an article in the Columbian about the planned closure.

Rest assured that we’ll do all we can to join other user groups in an effort to find other options for an ice facility.  Please email me if you’d like to be involved in any fundraising, sponsorship or other activities pertaining to finding other options for our club. In the meantime, I will keep you all informed on any and all updates.

February 2018

It’s happening! The 2018 Winter Olympics are taking place in PyeongChang, South Korea, RIGHT NOW through February 25th! Watch and cheer on all of our talented U.S. athletes! Go Team U.S.A.! 

Congratulations to John Henry Krueger for his silver medal in the 1000m! Read more about it here. 

Our next scheduled ice session is February 25th, from 1:00pm-2:00pm.

For March, we’ve been given the choices as follows –

ALSO – I can now accept payments by debit/credit card using Square. We also accept cash and checks made out to Mountain View Speedskating.

Coming soon – we’ll have an online store, where you can buy items with our club name on it and 10% of purchases go to our club’s ice time fund.

Here’s what’s new:

We’ve been trying to negotiate with the ice rink for some better times to skate than the brutal Sunday 7:15am timeslot. SUCCESSS!  Here are the next scheduled sessions:

Sunday, Nov. 5th 1:30pm-2:30pm
Sunday, Nov. 12th 1:00pm-2:00pm

Sunday, Nov. 19th 1:00pm-2:00pm

Due to the increase in rink fees for the afternoon ice time, we will be increasing the session fees to $20 per person for adults. New skaters will still pay $15 for their first session, and skate rental is included.

Each week during our skating season, I contact the rink to book our ice dates/times based on availability, and feedback on when you prefer to skate.This is based on the responses I get, whether by email, survey answers, Facebook, or text. Your responses are important! Thanks for being a part of this club.

How do YOU stay in shape over the summer? With all that the Portland/Vancouver area has to offer, there are certainly many fun outdoor activities to choose from.

We have many skaters interested in organizing and attending some off-ice dryland workouts this summer, so if you’re interested, add your name to the list by sending us an email. We’ll be in touch.

Want to help us obtain more ice time? Here’s how:

Every year we assemble a crew of volunteers to work at the annual Providence Bridge Pedal  This year the event is on Sunday, August 10th. I will be sending out emails to get people signed up. Here’s what we need:

Hawthorne Bridge Crew:

Saturday (Matt Furcron + 5 more) 5pm – 9pm

Sunday (Linda Jellison + 5 more) 10am – 1pm

McLoughlin Coning Crew – 3 people

Macadam Coning Crew – 3 people

March 2 Skate Sharpening Session!

There will be a skate sharpening session after we get off the ice this Sunday (March 2). If you have a sharpening jig and stones, please bring them! Otherwise, we can sharpen your blades and show you how it’s done.  Please see this video for a preview – taken at our summer dryland working / picnic a couple of years ago.
